Chips for Everyone!

Please help!  We have 15 cubic metres (a lot!) of bark chips being delivered on Friday 25th January to be spread on the ever popular adventure trail.  We need the bark to keep the area safe and free from weeds.  If you or another family member are able to help after lunch on this day please just turn up and offer a hand.  I suggest you come suitably attired and bring any spades, rakes and wheelbarrows that you may have.

Probably the Best PTA in the World.

On behalf of everyone at the school, thank you to all those who worked so hard, especially the committee, for the Christmas Bazaar.  It was a very good afternoon, thoroughly enjoyed by the children, as well as making over £1500 towards a wind turbine and school garden.

There are going to be lots of great PTA events coming up this year.  Please keep looking at the new noticeboard outside Room 13 on the edge of the playground.  The next event is a Mothers' Day sale.  This will be on 29th February.  We are planning to have refreshments during the afternoon for parents and some great gift ideas for mums of all ages.  Cake sale and raffle after school too!  Please bring any donations of motherly type gifts to the school office

In the Swim...

Lessons for the Upper School begin on Wednesday 20th February.  Please forward a donation of £22.00 for the year (or £11.00 and second payment after Easter) - cheques payable to St Thomas' Junior School.  A reminder that all children have to wear a suitable costume for swimming (no beach wear!) and a swimming hat, available from the school office price £1.00.  Please contact your child's teacher if you have been CRB'd and can offer help walking to the pool.

No Buses for ages, then three come at once

I will be sending more information about this soon, but there is good news regarding the walking buses.  We are in negotiations with Sainsbury's to start after summer break.  Please encourage Sainsbury's about this whenever possible!  We are aslo talking to: St George's Church, The Brentwood Centre, Brentwood Fire Station, Brooks House and Brentwood Station.

On Your Bike!

I hope that this year at least 18 of our year 6 children will be able to undertake a cycling proficiency course in the Summer Term.  Even more children will be able to take part if we get a few more people willing to help as "instructors".  Full training is provided.  Please get in touch if you would like to chat it through: theheadteacher@hotmail.co.uk

Amazing but true...
I was handed a cheque today for £1000 from two parents who have asked their employer (HSBC) to "match fund" (i.e. a £ for £ scheme).  The parents were able to claim £1 from the bank for every £1 they had raised for the school.  As they both help regularly in PTA events selling cakes and running stalls they were able to ask for £500 each (the most the empoyer would offer).  Is it worth asking if your employer will do a similar thing? Safety First

Please remember that children are not allowed in the car park at the front of the school because vehicles are moving throughout the day.  Everyone should use the footpath.  I would also appreciate children not using scooters, bikes or "heelys" on school premises for safety reasons.  A final reminder: no dogs and no smoking!

Your assistance please

I am looking to recruit more Midday Assistants.  If you are interested please let me know.  It is a great way to help the school, improve lunchtimes for children and earn money.

Parents' Evenings

As usual we will be having parents' evenings during March (5th and 6th) in the school hall.  If your child is taught by a different teacher for English and/or Maths, they will also be available.  Appointments will be about 5 - 10 minutes and your time will be allocated in half-an-hour periods, with parents first in the queue seeing the teacher.  Please return the slip by 1st February if you wish to attend.  We will then work out appointment times and get back to you. If you don't hear from us that usually means that the time you have requested is suitable.  When everyone has returned their slips we will then contact you with a specific half hour slot and an opportunity to "Feed Forward" any concerns that you wish to raise.  Please note: we would appreciate you not bringing your children into school on these occasions.

PS If anyone knows how to set up and on-line booking systems for Parents' Evening please let me know!

theheadteacher@hotmail.co.uk

Thank you for your on-going support.

Best Regards

Mr Scott-Evans (Head Teacher)
