Curriculum Advice for the Summer Term 2009
In addition the Yearly Outline Curriculum Plan (available from the School Office) the grids below will give you more details of planned work for this term. We hope that you will be able to help your son/daughter explore and discuss these areas as well as set homework.
All year groups will be having English and Mathematics lessons every day. You can support your child in a variety of ways including: reading and discussing books with your son/daughter; helping him/her to learn spellings and number facts (e.g.multiplication tables).
The first table details the curriculum for the Lower School (Years 3 and 4), and the Upper School (Years 5 and 6) curriculum is shown in the second table.

| Art & Design
|
We will be exploring pattern and texture in the natural and man made environment. We will use what we have learnt to create patterns on a Tudor style clay "Posy Plate" and collaged Tudor portraits

D&T
|
The children will design and make model Tudor houses. They will measure, mark and cut materials. They will join with glue and consider how to finish the model to a good appearance.

| History
|
The children will be learning about the Tudors and locating the period in British history. Topics will include a study of kings & queens, Tudor explorers, and the lives of rich and poor.

|
I.C.T.
|
The children will be using a program called "Super Logo". This is a piece of software that gives children experience of programming the computer for themselves. Various version of LOGO can be downloaded for free from the internet, if you want to try it at home! (e.g. www.softronix.com/logo.html)

| Music
|
During the 1st half of term we will carry out practical activities using various instruments. This will include some work on Pentatonic scales. In the 2nd half term we will be learning a variety of songs while playing games and composing pieces based upon a journey around the seaside.

| P.E.
|
This term we will be having lessons in: dance - Tudor music; gymnastics - rolling; athletics - running, jumping & throwing; and games - striking and fielding eg cricket and rounders.

|
We will be studying a variety of topics including: after the resurrection; relationships; coping with loss; the Trinity; God our father and helper; the Bible; Christian lives; St Thomas of Canterbury; and coping with change. |
| Science
|
At the start of the term we wil be investigating light and shadows, carryin out practical explorations of how light travels. In the second half of the term we will be studying human and animal life cycles, including a visit to Weald Park.

Spanish |
This term we will continue to consolidate greetings, numbers to 20 and days of the week. In addition, we wil learn colour words, further numbers, months of the year and vocabulary associated with birthdays culminating in a written birthday invitation.

| Art & Design |
We are focussing on space, texture and form. We will make a seated figure and chair which links to our history topic, using wire, modroc and papier mache.

| D & T |
We will be designing and making tie dye T-shirts and felt bags. The children will be taught simple sewing techniques. Some parental support will be required - please speak to your child's teacher if you can help.
|
| History |
The children will be learning about important events and changes in Britain since 1930. We will look at World War II, and then the children will research one specific area of life and how it has changed since 1948.

| I.C.T. |
We will be using Microsoft Powerpoint to make slide shows and presentations. The children will add pictures, text, sounds and buttons. They will consider the use of multimedia in other software. Increasingly, ICT is used to support other areas of the curriculum as children's skills improve and develop.

| Music |
In conjunction with our history topic, we will be learning songs from the BBC programme "We'll meet again". The songs encourage a variety of styles of singing, singing as a group and learning about musical characteristics of songs.

This term we will be having lessons in: dance - world of sport; gymnastics - synchronisation; athletics - running, jumping & throwing; cricket; rounders; tennis; swimming.

We will be studying a variety of topics including: after the resurrection; relationships; coping with loss; the Ascension; God our father and helper; the Bible; Christian lives; St Thomas of Canterbury; and coping with change.

| Science |
Up to half term we will be learning about the Earth in space, including recording the phases of the moon in a diary. Year 6 children wil also prepare for SATs. After half term we will be exploring the environment at school, in the local area and around the World. If you want a project for the half-term holiday, you could look at plants and animals in different areas.

- research ideas at the local library and help your child to develop his/her library skills;

- watch relevant television programmes that may support their work, or visit a museum
or place of interest;
- simply talk to your child about what they are learning.
